Some tech links

“Strolling down Madison Ave yesterday, I was passed by a taxi bearing an LED ad-board. The ad displayed what has to be the most trivial instantiation of location-aware advertising possible, the kind of Phildickian gimmick we’ve been predicting for years. Drawing, no doubt, on the cab’s current GPS coordinates, cross-referenced against the advertiser’s database, the message was ‘Stop by the nearest BankBrand ATM @ 35th and Madison!’”

Mitsubishi Electric unveiled a prototype cell phone with an LCD display that can be viewed from both sides. … this could possibly affect the current trend in clamshell-type cell phones having two separate displays. Cell phones would also be thinner and cheaper

The ATI HDTV Wonder … supports Analog, Digital and High Definition Television signals, making it an extremely versatile TV Tuner Card.

And especially for ; “… researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are showing lightweight and man-portable cooling technology, leading to truly wearable air conditioners“.

A quick windows question

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2004

I am in a bit of a predicament. The Dundee Central Library computers have restricted user profiles which means that whenever I follow a link online to an mp3 file it automatically opens and plays it in Windows Media Player. Does anyone have any idea as to how I can get around this behaviour so that I can download mp3s to a CD-R? Left and right mouse button dragging only allows one to create a shortcut to the mp3’s url. It’s Windows 2000.

P.S. As you would expect from a restricted user profile, there is no right button menu available in IE ;p

ArghArghArgh!

Saturday, March 20th, 2004

Argh, I hate my bloody teeth. Apart from the fact that I haven’t been able to chew sweet foods in the left side of my mouth for several months now, and that I’m not too keen on the look of my sticky-out-verging-on-buck front left tooth, the big tooth right at the bottom back right of my mouth has developed a rather large and jagged hole. I really must get all of this seen to quite quickly. Damn those extra crunchy hash browns in the canteen.

My flat-warming party is this evening, but I have absolutely no idea how many people are going to turn up. Stu, Andy, Jo & Richard are definites. Scott, Daz, Drew & Thomas the Goth are hopefuls. Several work colleagues are possibles. I have two hours after work in which to pick up some snacks, get home, clean up my room then have a shower. And I’m working tomorrow from 9am. Sodding weekend shifts.

I have so many links I’d like to mention, but so little internet accces. Do bear with me, and I’ll post some of them soon.

An update on me

A couple of big things to mention:

  • My job is going very well. I finished the three weeks of training and have been taking calls for a week and a half now. If you can’t remember, it’s working as a technical support agent for BT Business Broadband (situated in Dundee’s 80s futurist themed Technology Park). works in the building right next to mine (Visual Sciences) and sometimes gets on the same bus. Taking calls seems to be getting easier by the day as we take in all the possible solutions for the problems that come up and as we learn our way around all the different systems we use. The best part of the job is some of the weird calls you get, but I’ll save those for a later post.
  • I’ve moved into a flat of my own. It’s a fair sized room with quite a high ceiling in a bed-sit, which has two other guys in it already. It’s £150 a month which is pretty cool, and my parents were kind enough to help me by painting it pure white so it’s got a nice clean feel to it now. I’m planning to have a small flat warming do next Saturday evening, but as I’ve never thrown any kind of gathering before, I’m not entirely sure how I to organise it, especially as there isn’t really anywhere else people can go in the flat other than the room. Ah well.

A couple of smaller things to mention

  • If you haven’t already noticed, I’ve set-up a Movable Type blog (here). It utilizes a plug-in to crosspost all the entries I make there to my LiveJournal account. Benefits are that I now have full entry RSS 1, RSS 2 and Atom post syndication (not available to free users on LiveJournal), access to site stats and referrers, and total control over the blog layout (sod LiveJournal’s overly complex S2 theme system).
  • Stream all available songs by Peaches and similar artists.
