The Colbert Report

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I’ve done it again. That is, managed to loose several hours to browsing YouTube for The Colbert Report episodes and clips. If you haven’t heard of before, The Colbert Report, featuring Stephen Colbert, is a satirical news show made by Comedy Central that parodies the conservative Fox/O’Reilly style of reporting. Think The Day Today/Brass Eye meets Bremner, Bird and Fortune. See Stephen Colbert vs. Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, Truthiness, Hell, Yes, Bubble Boy, The War On Christmas and The New York Times Want You And Your Family Dead. Other notable clips include Better Know a District – Florida’s 19th where congressman Robert Wexler decides to play along with the humour plus Colbert Responds to Wexler Cocaine Comment Uproar. Oh, and don’t miss out on Colbert’s speech at White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, parts one, two and three. Saying that, Bush’s speech is worth checking out as well. It took me a while to click that it was for real rather than some kind of Dead Ringer-esq bluescreen action going on. Here’s some full eps for anyone who’s interested. Ohohoh, and also, the show that spawned The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, is also Rather Good.

Valve’s Portal

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Video on YouTube. Article on Wikipedia. Think Half-Life 2’s gravity gun plus Prey’s zany use of portals. This should make for some amazing gameplay tactics. Set to be released in a few months time along with the Half-Life 2: Episode 2 episodic content release (and it’s set to be in the Half-Life universe which should be interesting).

Tor

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Anyone have any experience using the EFF’s net anonymisation system Tor? I’m thinking of giving it a go but was wondering if anyone had any hick-ups with running it, mainly in what kind of effect it has on apparent/actual connection speeds.

Defrag your home

This is how I’ve cleaned my flat for a while now, but it’s always nice to hear that others feel and handle situations like these in a similar manner. Also is this, more tips on how to handle life.

Dance at my party

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Check this contraption in which “the less you move (and relax) the more it makes you dance”. I find the concept interesting because if I don’t move in some basic manner while around music, I’ll start unconsciously and uncontrollably moving anyway, starting out with an autistic-like rocking motion and in time with the music but leading up to a finer gradient of juddering depending on the track. So I find it better to put this impulse to good use and control it all when dancing. That, plus the heading thing, is why I usually dance so much in clubs, although I’m rightly fucked for trying not looking like a spack during proper noise sets. And now you know.

Google Checkout

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

In case you haven’t heard, Google opened Google Checkout a couple of weeks ago. Checkout the video demo there for an overall view. Here’s the pre speculation (wow, finger directly on the pulse there), the official announcement, details and quotes, usage demo, list of sites that use it, the news that eBay has banned it’s use (eBay owns PayPal btw), and talk of how it will be integrated with Google Base, Google’s craigslist clone.

I’m actually starting to loose count of the amount of services and notable business investments Google has made in the last couple of years. It has been reported since the start of 2005 that they’ve been buying up dark fibre (laid but yet unused fiber optic networks) and the growing speculation as to what they’re going to do with it is always interesting to follow. With the growing issue of net neutrality, the possible conclusion they’d like to bypass the whole issue by having their own network has arisen. It also seems obvious that Google is much smarter than Microsoft, and, rather than resting on their laurels, are playing a game of strategic investment chess with absolute shit load of money they have to spare. Unfortunately for me I’m not Cringely so I’ve absolutely no clue where this is going and nothing more to contribute than a collection of links, but I am sure that what ever their end game is, it’s going to be fucking big.

Those crazy slashdotters..

As seen on this /. posting; this and it’s reply. And people keep saying the editors are getting sloppy..

In other news, I have just been given an amazingly tempting offer that would most likely increase my happiness greatly. But it would mean a big change and I’ll really have to consider it… Butbutbut.. gah.
