Firewall, etc, box

Monday, June 29th, 2009

After salvaging a fairly new mobo, ram and hdd from a mini-tower I found abandoned next to a recycling bin a couple of weeks ago, I’m looking to put together a firewall/gateway/misc server box for kicks and educational purposes.

After a Wikipedia/Google trawl, the options I’ve come up with for a suitable set-up are Endian, eBox Platform , SME Server and pfSense.

I’m wondering if anyone has comments on these or alternative suggestions? Thanks!

Image host migration

I’ve just shifted all my piccies from Google Picasa Web to Flickr using Migratr (which can migrate between multiple services). Bah, I’m sure I’ll be bothered to sort titles and descriptions at some point.

Wi-fi noise to signal

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

“The term ?warwalking? isn?t used very often, but the Ekahau HeatMapper adds a new tool to the pod bound hacker?s arsenal. The tool maps out wireless access points as well as their signal strength within a facility. A test of the HeatMapper on a map made with AutoDesk Dragonfly accurately determined the location of a router within 3 feet and helped tune the angle it needed to be at for maximum range.” link

Love the advert.

also

inSSIDer is an award-winning free Wi-Fi network scanner for Windows Vista and Windows XP. … Inspect your WLAN and surrounding networks to troubleshoot competing access points. Track the strength of received signal in dBm over time. Filter access points in an easy to use format. Highlight access points for areas with high Wi-Fi concentration.” link

Anyone got similar software tool recommendations?

Also, need to try make me one of these soon..

Newspapers being progressive

“The [New York] Times’ data will join content from Project Gutenberg, a vast online library of text from public domain books, data from the U.S. census, and information from many other formative and vital entities in the semantic web space. Larson and his team intend to make available hundreds of thousands of tags for content dating back to 1851. … The results of this effort will in time take the shape of the Times entering this Linked Data cloud.” link

Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee on the importance of Linked Data.

The Guardian: “Join us in digging through the 700,000 documents of MPs’ expenses to identify individual claims, or documents that you think merit further investigation. You can work through your own MP’s expenses, or just hit the button below to start reviewing. (Update, Thurs evening: More added now and more coming all the time. Check back if you haven’t found your MP yet) … We have 232947 pages of documents, of which 147996 are unreviewed.” link

Augmented Reality stepping up

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Couple of things out in the last few days on AR;

“Layar shows you what is around you by displaying realtime digital information on top of reality through the camera of the mobile phone. Just flip through the directory of layers and find ATM’s, bars, houses for sale, hotels and other cool stuff around you.” link

and

ARhrrrr! Augmented Reality Zombie and Helicopter Game “Our primary motivation for this AR game was to explore fast-action first-person augmented reality, where the camera controls and movement that would typically require a mouse and keyboard are handled directly by simply moving the device. Advanced tracking technology allows the player to quickly zoom in and out and view the world at steep angles, making this a highly interactive and engaging game.” link

And if you missed it, Google released their Sky Map app for android phones a few weeks ago – PR video here, basic demo video here.

Aaaand if you missed it way back in 2002, ARQuake (plus other AR videos).
